Right - lets get Firefox working in Meego

 installing Firefox in Meego 1.1

Look Meego is about being online so your internet may as well be what you want

Never that happy with either Chrome or Chromium in Meego (or Ubuntu if I am honest) don't know why. It isn't corporate stuff either...just feels ...a bit 'windows like'

So in Moblin you used to be able to easily install Firefox (Fennec - Moblin's Web Browser was firefox based I am sure)....very good it was too

Not possible in Meego 1.1...not in the repos at the moment so some clever chums on the Meego Forum (thats Profebral and Zombie- thanks!) did a helpful posting about setting up Firefox in Meego to look like Chromium but also like firefox

After a few trials here is what I did to install firefox and make it how I like it as seen here

2 steps to Firefox like me

Install Firefox

This looks complicated ( so much so I nearly never did it but it was actually remarkably easy and teaches you a new skill to boot !

Go the Firefox download page for Linux here

Firefox Download Page

Click the big download button shown here

Ok...you are going to download a .tar.bz2 file...stop panicking...it is easy to do (remember I did it)

Click to save it in your download folder

When it has downloaded open a terminal and I will talk you through what to do

cd Downloads     (to get into your downloads folder)

Then  you need to extract the firefox folder from the tar.bz compressed file by typing

tar -axvf firefox-3.6.12.tar.bz2

 Your can then move the folder into your home folder by typing

 mv firefox ~

and creating a desktop item for you to click on!

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/mozilla-firefox-custom.desktop

This creates a little text  file where you can paste in the following info and press save but make sure you select all the text from Desktop to WebBrowser:

Desktop Entry]
Name=Firefox Web Browser custom
GenericName=Web Browser
Comment=Browse the Web
Exec=/home/YOUR-USER-NAME*/firefox/firefox %u

* don't forget to replace YOUR-USER-NAME* for your name you have chosen in meego so mine said Exec=/home/Andy/firefox/firefox %u

2 Set up some decent add ons

I like Firefox but I need a few add ons to make it nicer

Open your new firefox and  select tools and Add ons

I then installed the following:
Chromifox Companion 1.2 (ok Chromium was not 100 % ugly)
Fission ( to show progress on page load- no more how long til loaded grumps)
Foobar which combines address and search bars into one
New tab homepage (if you have like me Google.co.uk as your homepage when you hit new tab..up comes google not an empty tab...much faster

Install those and set them how you like

Lastly to get it the fonts  looking like I wanted I went to preferences and Content and set up all the Fonts in advanced to Droid Sans 16 and min 13 and DIS allowed webpages to set their own fonts . Clicked ok and restarted firefox

It now looks like this

Hope that helps and again thanks to Profebral and Zombie on http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=555 for their guidance.

Hello there! I have Meego 1.2 installed on my netbook and I absolutely love it... except Chromium is a really big pain. Chromium is very, very slow on my netbook and causes many hangups, largely because of sandboxing and how it tries to cache everything. I would install another web browser but my only problem is that Chromium is, I believe, deeply intrerated with Meego. Selecting the internet button on the top bar gives me functionality that I do not want to lose. Is there any way I can do the same with Firefox? Thanks.
