Meego: First Impression

MEEGO

Well , I have been using moblin on and off for a while now and been waiting for the release of Meego which was released on Wednesday
Here are my first impressions :

Well as someone who used moblin on and off I was keen to see the release of Meego. Surprised there was no countdown like we get with Ubuntu etc as I could have put info out about it on blogs etc. Maybe that is something I can help with in the future.

Now then here perhaps is where I state what I expected to find

No wifi support - that is expected with my broadcom wireless so i know of solutions

No mp3 support - usually sortable dependant on your player needs

Bit crashy...its new- i take risks!

No office software - can sort

No skype - can sort that too

TESTING

Anyway..down to business ...got the link, downloaded it easily enough etc, made it into a live pen drive system as shown.

It booted first time for a live system fine.

Looks nice...slightly different than moblin hmmm but nice

I tested what was there and all seemed to work ok ...all of my guesses/assumptions were right so I took the brave /daft decision to install
It was nice to see a rearranged top panel

 Installation

Went very quick..bit strange as it did it in two stages ie install files and then set your pc afterwards but hey ..who cares

It was after installation that I checked for support for the issues above and got to work

Wifi was fixed following support from slaine.org ..updated for meego from the old moblin support. Bit more work than previously but easy to follow and installed the wifi drivers I needed

Rebooted...very fast by the way ;)

Thanks Greg!

SOUNDS
MP3 was a little more of a pain..the old gstreamers fix that slaine.org had did not work this time as Banshee would not work with them for some reason which I do not know so I downloaded the fluendo mp3 package from here

http://www.fluendo.com/shop/product/...o-mp3-decoder/

I could not get them to install properly for some daft reason so did a little research as when I tried to install them via the terminal I got the error of the package not being signed. The solution was to insert a command after to tell my pc not to check for signed packages...dont ask..I do not understand!
I copied the fluendo rpm into my home folder, fired up a terminal and told it to :
sudo yum localinstall fluendo-codecs-mp3-11-3.i386.rpm --nogpgcheck

bingo !

Music

Job Done!

SKYPE

I then installed skype using my own method here
http://andybleadengoeskubuntu.blogspot.com/2010/02/getting-skype-to-work-on-moblin.html
Sorry if previous link did not work
Skype was up and running

Open Office

I followed this guide
Install Open OfficeHOW TO INSTALL OPEN OFFICE ON MOBLIN FEDORA SYSTEMS
and followed the installation via the guide at the bottom (look for
Alternative Way To Install OpenOffice.org 3.2 with Graphical Setup)
ie
download extract it etc get into a terminal and get into the folder and then type

./setup

It sets up the open office installer gui thing which works a treat. I did it as a super user and it installed it really easily

quite a bit longer and I was progressing nicely ...with sounds too...the banshe e player was not as good as rhythmbox for me but I will get back to that another time.

Twitter was working much better for me than it did in moblin and seemed to show others updates too which was great

Still could not seem to sort last fm but I never have properly so I left that

INSTANT MESSAGING

Instant messenger was very tricky as other reported and only got msn working with aol icq and yahoo not working as others report.

The time was ticking at this point and needed to quickly reinstall a netbook ubuntu as I need a really reliable and connectable netbook for a few weeks but I will return and try more stuff when I can

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS

Well done team ..it was nice..a little crashy and the wifi had to be prompted with every reboot..but very nice all the same

All problems above will I am sure get fixes.. I am an optimist and look forward to trying this again soon.

It looked different than moblin slightly in a way that was not too comforting but not too threatening either

Mind you I did really like moblin

In conclusion ..a cracking release people :)

Thanks

I have also posted this on the Meego forum which is very good: Meego forums

Reposted from http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dell-mini-9-discussion/21116-meego-mini9.html

but this information is in the readme as well! Hope it helps! I know it got me up and running :D totally loving meeGo!

Successfully got the WiFi to work after following the Slaine guide upto a certain point, then follow with a build of the drivers.

All "Write this" commands are listed with a # infront of the line for easy reading

Instructions:
Go to the applications tab, and type Terminal. Launch it
Run the following commands. I don't think you need rpmdevtools, but what the heck! Grab it anyways! Might come in handy later on!
# sudo yum install rpmdevtools
# sudo yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
# sudo yum install kernel-netbook-devel

Download the 32-bit package from this site:
Broadcom.com - 802.11 Linux STA driver

Follow the readme steps. If you are lazy just follow these condensed steps:
In terminal, go to your Downloads directory
# cd Downloads
# mkdir hybrid_wl
# cd hybrid_wl
# tar xzf /home/YOURUSERNAME/Downloads/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.60.48.36.tar.gz
# make clean
# make
You might get a warning during the make build. Don't worry, it won't affect the later steps!
# modprobe lib80211
# sudo insmod wl.ko

Welcome to WiFi MeeGo!

We might want the driver to load every time we boot up MeeGo, so let's do the following!
# sudo cp wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
# sudo depmod -a

Hope this helps!
